Welcome Back Projects

The Welcome Back Project kicks off the year for Intermediate, Advanced, and Musical Theatre students.

It gives each student a chance to share something they enjoy performing or creating while introducing themselves to the class ensemble.

Class Resources: Welcome Back Projects

Select, rehearse, and perform or present a project of five minutes or less that showcases something you do well and feel confident in. Presentations take place in class and onstage.

Your project should:

  • Show where you are in your artistic journey.
  • Introduce you to the classroom ensemble.
  • Provide a starting point for setting goals.
  • Let you perform or present without restrictions on source material.
  • Showcase what you enjoy and feel confident doing.

Have fun and take creative chances. A piece you are considering for Thespys or Opening Night can be an opportunity to try material and receive feedback.

Welcome Back Project Ideas

  • Sing a song or perform a monologue. Choose something you love, including a non-theatre song or a piece you might not usually have an opportunity to perform.
  • Play an instrument.
  • Dance or choreograph a selection.
  • Create a pantomime performance.
  • Write, film and edit a short video clip or scene.
  • Write and share poetry or creative writing.
  • Perform your class audition piece again to show your progress.
  • Give an informative speech about a theatrical topic, such as a play or musical, lighting, Roman theatre history, Kabuki theatre or Sanford Meisner.

Have another idea to showcase your talent? Ask about it; the assignment welcomes different ideas.
